A Nintendo Switch Clone Could Be Coming

Qualcomm Is Making An Android Powered Device That Will Even Look Like A Switch
by Oliver VanDervoort on March 29, 2021

Qualcomm is apparently planning a foray into the consumer gaming market in the coming years. The company is said to be coming up with a handheld device that is going to look quite a bit like the Nintendo Switch. According to a source familiar with the company's strategy, the Android-powered game console will attempt to showcase the company's Snapdragon chipsets in a less traditional form factor.

Android Police claims it has seen images (though not final design) of the device and it does indeed look quite a bit like the Switch, according to the site. That includes Joycon looking controllers on either side of the main device. It is apparently a bit thicker than the Switch, which Qualcomm believes will allow the processor to work a bit better.

According to the same source, Qualcomm is using a premium supplier in the controller space to design and manufacture the gamepads.. The exact dimensions of the console and its display also weren't made available.

Like the Switch, the device will be able to be used either in handheld mode, or hooked up to a TV using HDMI cables. The device will use an HD card slot, much like the switch, for expanding memory, although this is expected to be a regular HD card slot, rather than a proprietary one like what Nintendo comes equipped with.

Finally, this device is said to run Android 12 with a customized launcher and feature full support for Google's suite of Play apps and services. In a promising sign for fans of Fortnite giant Epic, Qualcomm currently hopes to support the Epic Games Store app on its portable at launch.

If a potentially more powerful Switch that uses Android as its OS is attractive to you, there is one catch. It's unlikely this device will arrive before 2023.
