Anthem Director Jonathan Warner Leaves BioWare

Jonathan Warner, best known as the director of the RPG Anthem, has officially left BioWare.
by Luke Luby on March 30, 2021

BioWare hasn't been having a great time over the past few years. Anthem, perhaps the studio's biggest release in recent years, was a critical and commercial failure. It got to the point where Electronic Arts, the game's publisher, forced an entire reboot of the game. This would go beyond mere patches and would be a complete overhaul.

At the time of announcing the overhaul, the studio said:

"Over the coming months we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience, specifically working to reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards—while preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science-fantasy setting. And to do that properly we’ll be doing something we’d like to have done more of the first time around—giving a focused team the time to test and iterate, focusing on gameplay first."

However, that also didn't go well. As a result, the RPG's online components are being shut down and the game is effectively being destroyed. It seems as though BioWare is still facing a significant decline, as it's starting to lose a lot of its core leadership, both at the creative and non-creative departments. The latest of these is Johnathan Warner, who served as Anthem's director. While he didn't go into too much detail, Mr. Warner announced the news via Twitter.

Outside of Anthem, Johnathan Warner had worked on multiple games at BioWare. For example, he was Mass Effect: Andromeda's game director and served as the producer of Mass Effect 3: Citadel and Mass Effect for the Mass Effect Trilogy. His LinkedIn profile also states that he has served as the studio's chief of staff since 2019. However, there doesn't seem to be a public comment on Mr. Warner getting the position.
