Nintendo Responds To Labo Homepage Being Shut Down

The company had quietly shut down the Labo homepage without any official comment.
by Luke Luby on April 22, 2021

The Nintendo Switch's line of buildable cardboard accessories, Labo, proved to be somewhat of a hit, despite what many people might have anticipated. While it didn't gain too much of a market, it did have its lovers. That's what made it so surprising when the products were quietly removed from the Labo homepage. Per reports, the URL that originally hosted the content now redirects to Labo VR. The move was first noticed by someone on Twitter, as the gaming giant hadn't released any statements of the removal beforehand.

Since there wasn't any official comment, many Labo fans believed that the products were being completely gotten rid of. However, it appears as though that's not the case, according to a new statement from the company. While it's taken several hours, Nintendo has finally opened up about the move. By all indications, fans don't have anything to worry about.

Speaking to Games Radar, the company said:

"Nintendo Labo is available at retail locations. We routinely conduct product website maintenance and reorganization. Information on Nintendo Labo can be found at Nintendo.com."

Whether or not this means that the products will continue to be available online, however, is unclear. The buildable products were first made available in 2018. In the first year, about 1 million units were sold. That was drastically low compared to Super Mario Ultimate units, which numbered about 12 million in its first month.

While it did have the backing of Nintendo, Labo didn't have as much brand recognition as the Super Mario franchise, which could have been a driving force in Ultimate's sales. Regardless, it looks as though fans who are still interested in the Nintendo Labo can find them at physical retailers. Whether this remains the case for long, however, remains debatable, so it could be worth picking them up relatively soon.
