Huya Signs Massive $310 Million Exclusive Media Rights Deal for Chinese League of Legends

Huya signs a deal for one of the most important moments for esports media rights in history
by Tit Krajnik on April 30, 2021

Chinese live-streaming platform Huya has signed a $310 million five-year media rights deal with China's League of Legends operator TJ Sports. The deal will see Huya become an exclusive media right for all Chinese LoL esports competitions.

As a part of a five-year deal with TJ Sports - the joint venture from Tencent and Riot Games - Huya acquired exclusive broadcasting, distribution, and video-on-demand (VOD) rights to League of Legends esports in China.

According to Huya's Form 20-F report, the Chinese live-streaming platform splashed out ?2.013 million RMB ($310 million) to become the exclusive provider of all official LoL esports competition in the region from 2021 to 2025.

This purchase includes the Chinese top-flight competition, the League of Legends Pro League (LPL), as well as League of Legends Development League (LDL), and LPL's All-Star event.

As revealed by Huya, the broadcasting rights deal is for a five-year term, while VOD rights is a three-year deal. It covers Mandarin broadcast and does not include Macao, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

In addition, Huya is also allowed to produce derivative content that is based on TJ Sports-authorized LoL resources. That includes promotional videos, written content, highlights, replays, news and commentary.

This marks the second such deal in the Chinese esports scene. In August 2020, Chinese live streaming platform Bilibili acquired exclusive Chinese broadcast rights for all major global League of Legends competitions.

Bilibili’s three-year media rights deal with Riot Games covers the League of Legends World Championship, Mid-Season Invitational tournaments, and all-Star events.

In November 2020, Riot Games also unveiled that they're offering English streaming rights to the game's competitions to the right buyer. To date, there was no news about a possible closure of that deal, which would see all English-language League of Legends broadcasts on a single platform.

Huya has already signed a three-year deal with Riot Games in January 2020, to become the exclusive Chinese broadcast provider for both the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) and the LoL European Championship (LEC).
