Microsoft Will Match Epic Games Store's Revenue Sharing Model

Microsoft is entering a 88/12 revenue-sharing model with PC developers.
by Luke Luby on May 01, 2021

Microsoft is making a significant change to its business model, announcing that it's changing is PC revenue model to 88/12, with developers getting the larger portion. That's quite a distance from the 70/30 model that it kept up for so long. The move will bring it in line with the Epic Games Store, which has long been the more affordable option for studios.

There is one caveat, though; the model won't kick in until August 1. In a blog post, the gaming giant noted that there aren't any catches associated with the move. Developers will simply get a larger share of their game's revenues. As the Xbox creator noted:

"A clear, no-strings-attached revenue share means developers can bring more games to more players and find greater commercial success from doing so."

The company added that, while it has a significant way to go in building and maintaining trust with some gamers, it's up to the task. That's been especially true of PC gamers, who have often felt as though they were a second thought after Xbox console players. Regardless, Microsoft aims to do more in the future, with this move being the start of that journey.

As the company noted:

"We know that we still have a lot of work to do, but based on the response from both PC gamers and PC game developers, we think that we're headed in the right direction for this community with the investments we're making."

However, that isn't the only thing that the company has announced. In contrast, it added that Halo Infinite's multiplayer will allow crossplay. Progress should also carry between devices. As Microsoft noted:

"We know many of you play across more than just your PC, including on Xbox and mobile. That’s why we’re excited to announce Halo Infinite will support multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression when it releases later this year. That means if you’re playing on PC, you can play with your friends on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It also means that your multiplayer customization and progress will follow you across all platforms."

Looks like Microsoft's PC efforts are starting to ramp up.
