An Internal Microsoft Review Of The Last Of Us 2 Seems To Mirror Fan Reviews

An alleged review that Microsoft conducted on The Last Of Us 2 ahead of release seems to mirror fan sentiments.
by Luke Luby on May 05, 2021

A review of The Last Of Us 2, allegedly stemming from Microsoft, has been leaked online, with the reviewer's comments matching up pretty accurate with fan reception. The review was reportedly made months ahead of the game's release. When the game was released, it was met with a mixed reception. While it received praise for its narrative structure and a maturity not seen in many other titles, some gamers felt than certain twists were forced.

Despite this, the game proved to be a commercial success. One of the larger areas of criticism was combat. Though stealth sections were pulled off well, they felt as though they were simply a way to avoid direct combat. That might have helped polish over some of the game's weaknesses. They were quite easy to spot, however, as even the alleged Microsoft reviewer was able to notice the relatively sub-par combat.

As the review notes:

"Naughty Dog still can't seem to make decent gun combat in any of their games, and this one is no exception."

The reviewer did go on to note, however, that this may have been a way to force players into a more stealth-oriented style, which is where The Last Of Us 2 tends to shine. It was also highlighted that the combat was an improvement on the previous game's, although it still left a lot to be desired.

There were several areas that the reviewers praised, though. Attention to detail, for instance, earned quite a few brownie points in the review. As it notes:

"The visual quality and attention to detail in The Last of Us Part II is absolutely best in-class in basically every area, and the overall presentation is significantly ahead of anything that other teams have been producing on console and PC."

Regardless, it seems as though The Last Of Us 2 remained relatively unchanged following this, at it had exactly the same issues at launch.
