Mobile is a 'Real Priority' for Activision Blizzard

The studio must hire more devs first
by Luke Luby on May 07, 2021

Activision Blizzard's latest quarterly earnings have shown that the company has invested significantly in the mobile sphere. According to reports, the gaming conglomerate has no intentions of slowing down and plans to prioritize its mobile division. In its earnings call, the company noted that the mobile market is "a real priority" that will get "a lot of investment" and the hiring of "hundreds of mobile developers" is already underway.

Company president and chief operating officer Daniel Alegre noted that the end-goal was to have every one of its franchises available on mobile devices. As he noted during the call:

"Mobile is the ultimate driver of reach with almost 3 billion smartphones worldwide forecasted to be 4 billion in the next five years. We are doing ourselves and our community a disservice if our games are not on those platforms, which is why mobile is so important to our strategy. The opportunity is crystal clear...There might be several different ways a franchise can be represented on mobile, and there may be re-imaginations of an IP on mobile in addition to games that are more similar to a console or PC experience."

Mr. Alegre also spoke about previous acquisitions that Activision Blizzard has made in the mobile sphere. He specifically highlighted mobile developer King, which is perhaps best-known for creating the Candy Crush saga. He also noted the games that it was working on and that it had been a boon to the company, saying:

"[They] started with Call of Duty Mobile, [they're] following it up with Diablo Immortal, and [they're ]also working on a number of Warcraft mobile titles with some unannounced initiatives under way."

There's also the fact that Call of Duty Mobile was downloaded over 500 million times and made over $1 billion in revenue. With all that, it's no wonder Activision Blizzard is investing heavily in its mobile division.
