Bethesda Is Working On An Unannounced AAA Game

Bethesda is hiring for an unannounced AAA game
by Luke Luby on May 10, 2021

Bethesda's Austin studio is working on an unannounced AAA title if a recent job listing is to be believed. The open position, a qualified server engineer, specifically mentions the studio's "legacy of creating AAA games." While it's unclear where in the production stage the game is in, it's actively in development. However, it appears as though it's still in its very early stages.

As the job listing notes, whoever is hired will be responsible for building and refining back-end systems. That should mean that the studio is still creating the basic framework for whatever it's working on. The overall plot and characterizations, alongside possible mechanics, may have already been developed, though. After all, the developer isn't going to start putting infrastructure in place unless a certain amount of assets were already in place.

This doesn't mean that the server engineer will be working on The Elder Scrolls 6 or a new Starfield, as the job listing specifically states that the game is unannounced. However, it does mention that a successful applicant must have a "strong familiarity with Bethesda Game Studios games." That could mean that the AAA game is a new installment in one of the developers' other major franchises.

Since the company's Austin studio, where the position is based, was involved in Fallout 76, it's speculated that a successful applicant will be working on a new Fallout. However, it's also rumored that the game could be a multiplayer-focused entry in another franchise. Given how relatively little information is included in the job posting, it's impossible to know for certain.

Bethesda is currently confirmed to be working on The Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield. The latter of these may release sometime this year, according to some rumors, although the Elder Scrolls 6 is still several years away. Whether or not the developer's unannounced game will drop between these titles remains to be seen.
