Spider-Man Miles Morales Is Officially The Biggest Next-Gen Launch Game

The Timing Was Just Right
by Oliver VanDervoort on December 26, 2020

Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War was number one on the UK sales charts, but those numbers weren’t enough to make it the highest-selling PS5 launch title.

That honor belongs to Spider-Man Miles Morales, which also makes the sequel to the original Spider-Man game the winner of the next-gen consoles launch derby overall. Just how many consoles Sony sold isn’t known yet, but one of its titles being at the top of the list is certainly good news.

Retailers in the UK told analysts they believed the PS5 launch would be the biggest console launch in history when the smoke cleared. Some boost to sales numbers for the games that can be played on the console came thanks to the one week delay for the PlayStation 5 launch in the UK.

Games like Miles Morales and Sackboy were available before people across the pond were able to get their hands on the console.

In general, it was a good two weeks of sales for a ton of PS5 exclusives. The Xbox Series X and Series S didn’t have an exclusive title. Microsoft had to lean on the popularity of Cold War, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs: Legion in order to generate revenues.

On the PS5, Miles Morales took the top spot, with Cold War coming in second, Valhalla third, and then two other Sony exclusives in Demon’s Souls and Sackboy at fourth and fifth in terms of most copies sold.

Despite a strong showing, Miles Morales sales don’t come close to the original Spider-Man. It stands to reason at least one factor in that is the number of other new games that launched alongside the super hero epic.

Those who did buy the game certainly got their money’s worth as you can see in Gaming Daily’s official review of Insomniac’s latest masterpiece.
