Next PlayStation VR Will Be In 4K

It will also have better vibration support and new controllers.
by Oliver VanDervoort on May 19, 2021

A new report claims that Sony's long-awaited VR for the PS5 is going to be as big an upgrade of that tech, as the PS5 was compared to the PS4.

While Sony has not confirmed a report that surfaced towards the end of last week, it's no secret the company is planning to offer a "next-gen" version of its virtual reality offering. The company announced something was coming right around the launch of the PS5, but also said it would be a while before anyone saw it.

Now, Upload is saying that it has been told by those inside the company that is has significantly higher resolution, inside-out tracking, a vibration motor, and even foveated rendering.

The product doesn't yet have a name but it looks like has a resolution of 4000x2040 pixles, which means it is going to hit 4K standards. It will also have a lens separation adjustment dial, and gaze tracking capable of foveated rendering. All of that is to say that when players go inside this particular virtual world, it's going to be quite a bit more realistic.

Other details insiders have been willing to talk about are that the new VR headset will use a USB Type-C connection between the console and headset. The PlayStation 5 features a single USB-C port on the front of the device.

The new Sony headset will also use its onboard cameras to track the position of the new controllers, thereby simplifying setup dramatically compared to the current generation and unlocking more movement freedom for the player.

Since Sony has not confirmed any of these details just yet, there's no way to know when it might arrive. There is a chance the gaming community could get a look at this year's E3 or Summer Games Fest next month, but it's equally as likely we won't be hearing anything about this until at least, this fall.
