Starfield Is (Most Likely) Not Coming In 2021

According to some 2023 would be a more realistic timeframe.
by Oliver VanDervoort on May 22, 2021

Rumors of Bethesda's Starfield coming sometime in 2021 have started popping up again. Those rumors have gotten to the point where several different games journalists felt it was important to make sure people realized the game is still a ways away.

It started back up on Thursday morning, when one particular Twitter poster talked about Starfield as though he was an insider.

"Apparently, Starfield has been 'pretty much done' since September of last year," Luke Stephens a YouTube gamer wrote. "BGS has spent this year polishing it and refining the Next-Gen port. I’m told they’re trying to 'make up for Fallout 76 and deliver a game that’s 'polished to perfection.' Coming this year… Watch."

Almost immediately after Stephens posted the rumor, several different journalists rushed to make sure people knew it was false. Liana Rupert of Game Informer was one of the first.

She was far from the only one to shoot down the rumor.

Jason Schreier of Bloomberg News echoed Rupert's denials.

"Rumors like this keep floating around but Starfield is nowhere near done," he wrote. "According to several ppl familiar with development. It'll be at E3 but the planned release date I've heard is way later than most people expect. Sharing this so that folks keep their expectations in check."

Schreier went on to explain that work on Starfield didn't even begin until two years ago. Considering most games of the size Starfield is expected to be take at least four years from start to finish, it seems like 2023 is a more likely release year.

While this might be disappointing to those who were hoping to get to play the game this year, even Schreier is saying that it will be shown off at E3. That event kicks off in less than a month.
