Bots Led To Big PS5 Shortages

And Those That Used Them Feel No Remorse
by Oliver VanDervoort on December 26, 2020

While the PlayStation 5 saw a record launch day, analysts all over the globe feel it could have been even better if there had been more stock. More than a few people were clamoring for consoles they couldn’t get their hands on.

Now it’s come to light that while there were issues of stock availability, it turns out more people could have gotten their hands on a PS5 at launch, if not for “bots” that were buying up multiple units at a time whenever a retailer offered preorders.

These “bots” otherwise known as reseller groups pooled a massive amount of money and members and went out and purchased as many PS5s as they could. One group, CrepChiefNotify talked to Business Insider about how they operate. The group said it secured more than 3,500 PS5s ahead of launch day.

These aren’t consoles that people are going to be sitting down and playing. They’re geared towards selling to desperate people on sites like eBay for quite a bit more than the MSRP.

One way they’re able to get their hands on that many units is because they’re able to know when they are going to go on sale before anyone else. By getting that many consoles, they’re driving up the demand and the price and making everything that much worse for those who genuinely just wanted to get their hands on a new PS5 or Xbox Series X or Series S.

If you’re ever wondering how consoles sell out just minutes after they pop up on a retailer’s website, it’s not because you were that much slower than another social media user. You’re doing battle with big companies who aren’t in it for the fun. They’re in it for the money.
