Microsoft Is "Accelerating" Its Hardware Development Plans

Despite an increased focused on cloud gaming, Microsoft is "accelerating" its hardware plans.
by Luke Luby on June 12, 2021

Microsoft is at the beginning stages of quite a few plans, with many of these revolving around cloud gaming. That's led to Xbox fans speculating that the gaming and technology giant would pivot away from its hardware. That naturally led to curiosity about what would happen to the physical console range. The conglomerate says that fans don't need to worry, as it has no intention of departing from consoles.

Instead, it's been claimed that the company is "accelerating" many of its hardware-focused plans. The news comes from Liz Hamren, who serves as CVP of Gaming Experiences & Platforms at the company. As she said in a recent press video:

"Cloud is key to our hardware and Game Pass roadmaps, but no one should think we're slowing down on our core console engineering. In fact, we're accelerating it. We're already hard at work on new hardware and platforms, some of which won't come to light for years. But even as we build for the future, we're focused on extending the Xbox experience to more devices today so we can reach more people."

Naturally, details are quite vague about what these networks and platforms will entail. Given that the newest generation of consoles is only about half a year old, it will be a while, regardless of how accelerated these plans are. That doesn't mean that Microsoft will be focusing on Xbox consoles, however. Instead, it will also be working on a lot of PC-related hardware. As Ms. Hamren noted:

"While we continue to expand in PC and mobile, console remains our flagship experience. We want to deliver the most powerful, capable consoles in the world, devices that empower our players to enjoy amazing games for years to come, including gameplay we can't even imagine yet."

It looks like Xbox and PC fans have nothing to worry about, as Microsoft remains committed to both areas.
