Starfield: A More Hardcore RPG Than Other Bethesda Titles

Are you ready?
by Luke Luby on June 14, 2021

Starfield was one of the bigger unveilings at E3 2021, although not all of the news related to the game came at the event. Instead, director Todd Howard spoke to several publications about the title, given that it caused a significant amount of buzz. With The Telegraph in England, he went into a bit more detail about the game, saying that it's "a bit more hardcore of a role-playing game than we've done."

He noted that there were a few influences for the upcoming RPG, with many of these being the developer's past releases. As Mr. Howard noted, the studio is "going back to some things that we used to do in games long ago that we felt have really let players express the character they want to be." The game studio head also let a few other details slip in the interview, saying:

"It is a first-person and third-person game, like our other ones," he noted, referencing the likes of the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchise. During the interview, Todd Howard said that Starfield will have "large scale goals and storytelling," alongside a rewarding gamplay experience. Outside of that, almost no other new information is known about the game. Fans of the studio might remember a few announcements and pieces of leaked information that came out in the past, however.

For instance, Bethesda previously noted that the RPG would be using an overhauled game engine. That could help avoid the issues that plagued many of their previous titles, many of which shared the same engine. There'll also be an entirely new character animation system.

As announced during E3 2021, Starfield will be released on Xbox Series X/S and PC on November 11, 2022, in a suprise announcement on the offical Starfield website it is also slated to be playable day one with Xbox Game Pass. It was initially set for a release on the PlayStation. Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda has scuttled those plans for now however.
