BioWare Desperately Wants To Rebuild Its Reputation

With the appointment of a new general manager, BioWare is trying to rebuild its reputation.
by Luke Luby on June 15, 2021

BioWare was one of the more respected video game developers for quite some time. For a while, it had a span of hit RPGs that seemed as though it wouldn't stop. All great things come to an end, however, with the studio fumbling on a few occasions. Anthem would be the largest symbol of this. Naturally, players' devotion to the behemoth waned before they fled in droves. The company is trying to get them back, though, and wants to try rebuild its reputation.

That comes with the appointment of a new general manager in Gary McKay, who had first joined the company in 2020. He had been serving as an interim GM since Casey Hudson's departure in December. In a statement announcing the news, Mr. McKay said that it was a dream role, although there was an uphill battle ahead.

Calling back to the developers' history of award-winning titles, he spoke about rebuilding the company's reputation back to where it was, and possible going beyond that. As Mr. McKay noted in a statement:

"I’m so grateful for this opportunity. When you spend over 20 years in the industry, there are a small handful of studios on your bucket list in terms of teams you’d want to work with—and BioWare is at the top of my list. This studio is unique in that it has an incredible history of building critically successful games and universes that are truly beloved by so many fans. For me, success is all about rebuilding that reputation, and delivering on that promise of quality."

Gary McKay said that part of his role focuses on "setting a vision for the business, and then enabling the creative developers to do their best work as we come together as a team." Whether that helps BioWare succeed in rebuilding its reputation remains to be seen, as it's way too early to tell. Given that the studio has a few highly-anticipated titles in the works, gamers could know how the new leadership works out pretty soon.
