Nintendo Responds To Breath Of The Wild 2 Comparisons With Majora's Mask

Nintendo claims that comparing Breath of the Wild 2 to Majora's Mask isn't entirely accurate.
by Luke Luby on June 17, 2021

Breath of the Wild 2 is hotly anticipated, with a new trailer revealed at E3 2021 receiving a significant amount of attention. That's naturally led to more speculation about what the game will be like and what's included. Some fans have compared the upcoming game to Majora's Mask, as they believe that there are quite a few similarities. Nintendo has said that while that speculation is "understandable," it's not exactly accurate.

At least, it's not as accurate as fans of the Legend of Zelda franchise might believe. Speaking to IGN, Nintendo Treehouse’s Bill Trinen noted that the Majora's Mask comparison is easy to make. That's primarily because it's one of the more recent titles in the franchise and was one of the better received. Naturally, fans have been comparing Breath of the Wild 2 to it relatively favorably.

As Mr. Trinen said in an interview:

I would say it’s an easy comparison or conclusion to jump to at this point in time, just given what’s been shown so far and given the nature of it being a direct sequel. So I understand people making that conclusion, but at the same time – and I don’t want to delve too much into it – but this is its own game.

There have been a few similarities between the two games, partly because they're two of the rare direct sequels in the franchise. Majora's Mask is also known for taking things in a darker direction than its predecessor. Based on what's been released of Breath of the Wild 2 so far, especially at E3 2021, it seems to be going the same way.

Breath of the Wild 2 isn't even the game's official name; Nintendo simply has unveiled what it's called yet. Instead, it's only really said that it's a sequel to the original. That would put it in the same vein as Majora's Mask, which helps explain the current speculation. More information will be unveiled about the game in the coming weeks.
