Dota 2 The International Won't Be Heading To Sweden

Change of plan for The International 10
by Tit Krajnik on June 24, 2021

Valve announced that its Dota 2 The International 10 won't be traveling to Sweden after the Swedish government and the Swedish Sports Federation failed to accept esports into the sports federation. The decision will see the event moving venues ahead of its scheduled start in August.

Valve's announcement on Monday, June 21, unveiled that The International 10, scheduled to kick off on August 5, will have to move venues outside Stockholm, Sweden. The decision follows Sweden's Minister of the Interior denial to reclassify TI as an elite sporting event.

Despite Stockholm Live and Visit Stockholm reassuring the tournament organizers that Sweden will host the esports tournament this year, Valve got informed just two months prior to the scheduled tournament start that the Swedish Sports Federation voted against accepting esports into the sports federation.

"With the Minister of the Interior failing to recognize The International - Dota 2 Championships as an elite sporting event, anyone attempting to procure a visa for travel into Sweden for TI10 (including players, talent, and staff) would be denied," explained Valve in an official post.

"The absence of this official recognition also means individual border agents would be making decisions about entry for those traveling to the event from countries outside the EU who do not typically need a visa to enter Sweden."

TI10 was initially scheduled from August 18-23, 2020, but got delayed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The current situation could potentially see TI10 get delayed further, however, Valve remains committed to hosting the tournament this year, in a way "that is both safe for all involved, and properly celebrates the players and fans of Dota 2".

Sweden failing to accept TI10 has sparked concerns about the upcoming Counter-Strike: Global Offensive PGL Major Stockholm, which is scheduled to take place in Sweden on October 23 - November 7.

However, the PGL Major Stockholm organizers have told that plans to hold the first CS:GO Major since September 2019, have not been affected by the impasse between TI10 organizers and the Swedish government. Instead, PGL reassured the fans they're committed to hosting the event in the Swedish capital in autumn.

As it stands now, TI10 remains scheduled for its original dates (August 5-15), albeit with no news about a possible replacement venue. More information about the situation should become available soon as Valve tries to find a venue suitable to host the $40 million Dota 2 esports spectacle.
