Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Director Departs For EA Motive

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Director Eric Baptizat has left Ubisoft to work with EA and Motive on an unannounced project.
by Luke Luby on June 29, 2021

Assassin's Creed Valhalla has been a critical and commercial success for Ubisoft. Alongside setting sales records for the publisher, it has a long lifespan, thanks to a steady stream of new content. That doesn't mean that the game had an easy development cycle, however. If recent departures from the company are any indicators, development might have been rougher than some gamers believed.

Eric Baptizat, the director of the game, is the most notable and most recent of these. After serving with the company for 16 years, he's left the publisher to work with Electronic Arts. During his tenure with the company, he had worked on some of the publisher's most successful titles, including Assassin's Creed: Black Flag. He was also a major payer in Origins, which helped to revitalize the franchise and led to him directing Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

What's interesting about the new move is that neither Mr. Baptizat nor Electronic Arts have commented on the new hire. There were rumors of the hire as far back as April, which is when the new working relationship was reportedly set in stone. If correct, that would mean that Eric Baptizat was working out the remainder of his contract or any notice before leaving.

As there hasn't been any official confirmation of the hire, there's no word on exactly what he'll be working on. All evidence points to an unannounced project that EA Motive is rumored to be working on. Gamers have speculated that the developer, best known for working on Star Wars Sqaudrons, is working on a pre-existing IP that's already a fan favorite. Many fans of the publisher believe that this could be a Dead Space revival.

With EA Play coming up pretty soon, it's speculated that that's when the project will officially be announced. Regardless, it seems as though the Assassin's Creed Valhalla director's expertise will be in-demand from day one.
