Microsoft Honors Fallout 4 Star With Big Donation

The memory of Dogmeat lives on
by Oliver VanDervoort on July 12, 2021

One of the most beloved characters from Fallout 4 is living on in memory thanks to a sizable donation from Microsoft's Xbox division and Bethesda Softworks.

Dogmeat was the canine companion of Fallout 4's main protagonist and the pup that inspired the companion's design recently passed away. After one of the developers, Joel Burgess posted a tribute to his real life companion, River, Xbox went out of its way to pay tribute to the beloved pup.

"In honor of River, Xbox and @BethesdaStudios are donating $10,000 to the Montgomery County Humane Society," the company wrote on Twitter.

Fallout 4 senior designer Joel Burgess announced River’s passing on June 26, sharing details about how the dog heavily influenced the behavior and depiction of Dogmeat. Burgess’ announcement sparked an outpouring of condolences and well-wishes from fans and fellow developers.

Xbox and Bethesda picked that particular humane society because it resides in the same county that Bethesda’s Rockville, Maryland office is located in.

After the donation was announced, Michelle Burgess, Joel Burgess’ wife and fellow owner of River offered thanks on social media. “On behalf of River and her family, thank you!” she said.  “She was so precious in our hearts and we had no idea the magnitude of what she meant to the rest of the world.”
