Ghostwire: Tokyo by Bethesda & Developer Delayed

The game's quality just isn't cutting it
by Luke Luby on July 14, 2021

Ghostwire: Tokyo, which is being published by Bethesda and developed by Tango Gameworks, won't be hitting its original release date. Instead, the game has been delayed until next year. The developer, who is perhaps best known for The Evil Within, wasn't able to offer a new release date, although it did say it would be "early 2022."

In a statement posted to Twitter, the developers said:

We want to get the game in your hands as soon as possible so you can experience the unforgettable version of a haunted Tokyo that we’ve been hard at work building. At the same time, we’re also focused on protecting the health of everyone at Tango. Our new release window will give us time to bring the world of Ghostwire to life as we’ve always envisioned it.

The Evil Within developer also noted that it would be publishing more updates about Ghostwire: Tokyo "in the coming months." The game was first announced in 2019 and is a modern-day horror that has some Silent Hill vibes. Players will investigate disappearances across Tokyo City, each of which are unexplained and quite strange. It'll then be up to players to “purge the city of a strange, new evil.”

It's also been highlighted that an urban legend, conspiracies theories, and an occult threat will be involved. Outside of that, however, the game's official description doesn't offer too many details. Ghostwire: Tokyo will be a timed exclusive for the PlayStation 5 and will also be released on PC.

While the game didn't have an exact release date, it was slated to be released later this year. Though it will now come out in "early 2022," it's unclear exactly when. Over the past decade, Tango Gameworks gained significant popularity with the releases of The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2. Throughout this time, it's continued to have Bethesda - its parent company - as its publisher.
