Activision Sued for Harassment, Denies Allegations

Power abuse has led to reckonings both publicly and privately
by Luke Luby on July 24, 2021

Those in positions of power have been facing public and private reckonings for abusing that power in the past few years. Activision Blizzard is the latest company to have an alleged history of discrimination and harassment. The report comes from a California Department of Fair Employment and Housing lawsuit filed against the company. The suit itself focuses on "violations of the state's civil rights and equal pay laws."

Editor's Note: Some of the following information in this story may be upsetting or trigging to some. Please read at your own discretion.

Specifically, the agency allege that women and other marginalized groups and other marginal groups were severely mistreated while at the company. The agency had been investigating the publisher for over two years. The studio is also being called a "breeding ground for harassment and discrimination against women." As the lawsuit documents note:

"In the office, women are subjected to 'cube crawls' in which male employees drink copious amounts of alcohol as they 'crawl' their way through various cubicles in the office and often engage in inappropriate behavior toward female employees. Male employees proudly come into work hungover, play video games for long periods of time during work while delegating their responsibilities to female employees, engage in banter about their sexual encounters, talk openly about female bodies, and joke about rape."

The report also details the case of one woman committing suicide during a work trip with her supervisor. The supervisor had reportedly brought "butt plugs and lubricant" in hopes of coercing her into unwanted relations. Activison Blizzard has issued a statement defending itself against the lawsuit.

Alongside highlighting how it values "diversity and strive to foster a workplace that offers inclusivity for everyone," the studio spoke against harassment of any kind. Speaking specifically about the claims outlined in the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing lawsuit, the company said:

"The DFEH includes distorted, and in many cases false, descriptions of Blizzard’s past. We have been extremely cooperative with the DFEH throughout their investigation, including providing them with extensive data and ample documentation, but they refused to inform us what issues they perceived.  They were required by law to adequately investigate and to have good faith discussions with us to better understand and to resolve any claims or concerns before going to litigation, but they failed to do so."

Activision Blizzard's statement goes on to deny the claims made in the lawsuit.
