Dead Space Remake To Have A Level That Was Cut From The Original

A level that was cut from the original game because of "technical constraints" may come to the Dead Space remake.
by Luke Luby on July 29, 2021

Consoles and computers have changed significantly since the first Dead Space was released. Developers can now do more than they used to without compromising framerates or other issues. Now that the Dead Space remake is in development, Motive Studios and Electronic Arts can get past many of the technical constraints that the original had. That extends to a level that was cut before the original's release.

In an interview with IGN, creative director Roman Campos-Oriola noted that there were multiple changes in technology between development of the two titles. He said that this affected level design, among other factors. In the interview, Mr. Campos-Oriola noted:

"We started with the original level design of the original Dead Space. What's funny is that you can see some of the iterations that were made prior to ship by the team. In the first chapter, you can see some corridors that they wanted to do first in a certain way, and then you can understand why they changed it for technical constraints."

The Dead Space remake was announced during EA Play, where the publisher noted that the game is being remade from the ground up. It was also revealed that Motive Studios, Electronic Arts in-house development team that's been responsible for Star Wars Battlefront II and Star Wars Squadrons, is developing the game. A teaser trailer for the game was also unveiled.

Executive producer Phillippe Ducharme spoke about the game and how the original was why he wanted to join Motive Studios and EA. As he noted at the time:

"The Dead Space franchise made a huge impact on the survival horror genre when it was released 12 years ago, and I came to Motive as a fan first to specifically work on this game. We have a passionate team at Motive who are approaching this remake as a love letter to the franchise. Going back to the original and having the opportunity to do so on next gen consoles excited everyone on the team."

As of yet, a release date for the Dead Space remake has yet to be revealed.
