Sweden Remains a Possibility for CS:GO PGL Major

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championship could take place in Sweden
by Tit Krajnik on July 30, 2021

Sweden remains a possible host for the upcoming PGL Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major Championship, the tournament organizers announced on Wednesday, July 28. However, the decision will ultimately come down to the Swedish authorities.

"The PGL CS:GO Major playoffs will take place in Stockholm if the local authorities can make the event accessible to players, staff, and fans," said PGL.

"If things go as hoped, PGL will host the first Major since 2019 in the Aviici Arena in Stockholm. Otherwise, the event will be moved into another European venue on the same dates."

As revealed, the Swedish authorities are currently working on lifting restrictions for the PGL CS:GO Major. PGL has set a deadline on Monday, August 23, when Sweden should lift the entry ban, allowing players and everyone involved in the event to enter the country.

The second deadline is set for Wednesday, September 15. By then, Sweden should remove indoor restrictions for events in the country, which would allow PGL Stockholm Major to feature a full house for the tournament playoffs.

"The reason a Major is held in a particular city is to give local fans an opportunity to attend the event," added PGL.

"If only a small group of fans are able to attend, then the event might as well take place somewhere else."

While Sweden remains one of the options for PGL to host the CS:GO Major, the tournament organizers are prepared to change direction in September if the requirements aren't met. In such a scenario, PGL will move the Major into another European venue on the same dates.

The news follows PGL's announcement about a possible change of venue at the end of June. At the time, the tournament organizers expressed concerns about the COVID restrictions, which led Dota 2 The International 10 to change location to Romania.

The 2021 PGL Major is scheduled to take place on October 23 – November 7, with 24 teams in attendance and $2,000,000 in the prize pool. It will mark the 17th CS:GO Major in history and the first since StarLadder Berlin Major, which took place in August-September 2019.
