Xbox Game Pass Won't Come to Other Consoles Soon

Phil Spencer outlines strategy and future possibilities
by Luke Luby on August 14, 2021

Xbox Game Pass isn't coming to any other consoles in the near future, according to Xbox head Phil Spencer. The comments came in a recent GamesRadar interview, during which he was asked about the service coming to the Nintendo Switch. Mr. Spencer claims that no other platforms want a service like Game Pass, and there are multiple other areas where the service can grow.

As he noted in the interview:

“We have no plans to bring it to any other kind of closed platforms right now, mainly because those closed platforms don’t want something like Game Pass. There’s a ton of open platforms out there for us to grow in: the web, PC, and mobile. So all of our focus, frankly, is on those platforms.”

That doesn't mean that the Xbox Game Pass won't be coming to non-Microsoft-owned consoles in the future. Instead, Phil Spencer claims that the company is open to players on other consoles enjoying the "full experience" on whatever hardware they choose. That won't be quick, however. As Mr. Spencer claims:

“You know, evolution always takes time. There are different strengths that different companies have built through hard work, and some of these changes they might see as disruptive. And they’ll have their own kind of business cadence and pace at which they want to make those changes. In the end, when we say we want everybody to be able to play on Xbox, we really mean if we can bring that full experience to a device that players want, we are totally open to those discussions.”

Xbox Cloud Gaming is out in several months, however, which could be the closest some players will get. The platform allows players to access the Xbox Game Store and other services through a connected TV. While that doesn't mean that players can use their console to play Xbox games, it could avoid the need for picking up an Xbox console.
