100 Thieves Win Their Maiden LCS Title with A Clean Sweep Of Team Liquid

Sweet retribution for 100 Thieves
by Tit Krajnik on August 31, 2021

100 Thieves has won its first-ever League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) title as an organization on Sunday, August 29, with a clean sweep of Team Liquid. With that win, 100T secured the first North American seed for the 2021 LoL World Championship.

A Bumpy Road to The Finals

100 Thieves have won the LCS for the first time in the team’s four-year history on Sunday, with a commanding 3-0 sweep of Team Liquid. With that win, 100 Thieves became only the fifth North American LoL team to win the league, besides Counter Logic Gaming, Team Liquid, Cloud9, and TSM.

Although many viewed 100 Thieves as one of the strongest teams heading into the 2021 LCS Championship, they were not considered as a top candidate for the title. With the likes of Cloud9, Team Liquid, TSM, and Evil Geniuses in the race, the road to the trophy wasn’t easy, but 100 Thieves got it done in style.

100 Thieves started their 2021 LCS Championship campaign in the second round as the second-highest seeded team. They eliminated Evil Geniuses in the second round of playoffs with 3-2 and advanced into the upper bracket finals.

There, 100T met with the reigning LCS finalists, Team Liquid, who presented a tougher challenge for the boys in red. Although 100 Thieves grabbed a 2-1 series lead, they fell short in the final two maps of the game and lost with 2-3.

Regardless, 100T still had a chance to make it into the finals by eliminating the reigning LCS champions, Cloud9, in the lower bracket finals. Expected to struggle, 100T stepped up and dispatched Cloud9 with a clean 3-1 victory and booked a rematch with Team Liquid.

Having lost the first meeting with Team Liquid, 100 Thieves entered their second LCS finals as underdogs, but they quickly proved the doubters wrong. 100 Thieves humiliated Team Liquid with one of the most dominant showings of the season, won the series without dropping a single map and earned the right to lift the prestigious LCS trophy.

The finals victory was quite a form of payback for 100 Thieves, who, after winning the regular season in their first split in the LCS, made it to the finals of the 2018 NA LCS Spring Playoffs, only to lose against Team Liquid with 3-0. 100 Thieves have not reached another LCS final until Sunday when they got their revenge against the four-time LCS champions.

League of Legends World Championship Awaits

100 Thieves have already qualified for the 2021 League of Legends World Championship with their upper-bracket win against Evil Geniuses. However, it wasn’t until their win against Cloud9 that 100T secured a direct invite for the main event, leaving Cloud9 to fight through the Play-In stage.

100 Thieves will attend the 11th LoL Worlds as North America’s main representatives and LCS’s top-seeded team. It will mark their first appearance at the LoL World Championship since 2018 when they crashed out of the group stage with a 2-4 record and ended the tournament in ninth-12th.

Riot Games has not announced a start date for the 2021 LoL World Championship yet. However, the tournament organizers have unveiled that the competition will move from China to Europe due to complications surrounding the Delta version of COVID-19. Recent reports suggest that Iceland could host the tournament following the success of the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational; however, there are no official confirmations about it yet.
