Rocket League Championship Series Introduce New Regions, Format, and Prize Pool

Rocket League Championship Is Back!
by Tit Krajnik on September 17, 2021

The Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) announced a huge expansion for the 2021/22 season, with more regions, a new format and a $6 million prize pool.

New Regions Enter RLCS

Psyonix announced that starting with October, the RLCS will expand into three new regions - the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Asia-Pacific North, and Asia-Pacific South. Adding to that, there will be three regional splits for the Sub-Saharan Africa region, which won't be recognized as an official region, albeit will still receive two spots for the Rocket League World Championship.

The expansion opens RLCS to new countries across two continents, making the upcoming RLCS season the most worldwide competition yet. Along with the expansion, Psyonix also revealed a new competitive format.

"With this expansion, we also wanted to increase the uniformity of our leagues and competitions," read the announcement.

"We're excited to announce that every region playing in the RLCS 2021-22 season will now be playing the same format. This will help make it extra clear to fans around the world who's performing at the top of their regions and how they compare to their international counterparts."

RLCS X was the biggest format change in history by moving away from League Play to an open, circuit-based format. While Psyonix didn't want to alter the introduced structure too much, the RLCS 2021/22 will see plenty of changes that the organizers believe are needed to be made with the league's expansion.

Changes for 2021/22 RLCS:

  • The season will be divided into three splits (Fall, Winter, and Spring), leading into the Rocker League World Championship
  • Each regional event will begin with an open qualifier
  • Teams are able to automatically qualify for regional events via their performance at the previous regional event. *For the first regional event, all teams will have to go through the open qualifiers.
  • Each split will feature three regional events, ending with a Major
  • Teams earn points from each event; Majors award more points. These points are used to qualify for the Rocket League World Championship.
  • RLCS: The Grid won't be returning for the 2021/22 season.
  • Teams are allowed to make two roster changes throughout the season; a maximum of one per trade window, without forfeiting points

RLCS World Championship Overhaul

Psyonix announced a massive overhaul for the Rocket League World Championship. This year, the tournament will get split into two stages – Wildcard and Main Event.

Eight Rocket League teams will automatically qualify for the World Championship Main Event based on their performances in regional events and Majors. An additional 16 teams will qualify for the season-culminating event as Wildcards and battle in a Swiss bracket for the final eight Main Event slots.

Wild Card Seeding

  • North America: Three seeds
  • Europe: Three seeds
  • Middle East & North Africa: Two seeds
  • Oceania (OCE): Two seeds
  • South America: Two seeds
  • Sub-Saharan Africa: Two seeds
  • Asia-Pacific North: One seed
  • Asia-Pacific South: One seed

Return of LAN Events

Psyonix plans to reintroduce LAN events for the RLCS 2021/22, starting with the Fall Major, which is slated to take place in Stockholm, Sweden, from December 8-12. In light of the evolving situation regarding COVID, the tournament organizers have unveiled that the Fall Major will be players-only, with no live audience.

Regardless, Psyonix enter the 2021/22 RLCS season with full intentions to bring back international LAN events and host every Major and the Rocket League World Championship on LAN. Depending on the situation with the pandemic, the organizers will also explore options of bringing back the crowds to watch the games in person.
