CS:GO PGL Major Confirmed To Take Place In Sweden

A two-year wait ends in October
by Tit Krajnik on September 17, 2021

After a long and tedious wait, PGL announced that the upcoming Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major will take place in Stockholm, Sweden, as initially intended. The news follows a period of uncertainty while the esports tournament organizers worked with the Swedish government to accept the $2,000,000 tournament into their country.

CS:GO Major Heads to Avicii Arena

The 2021 PGL Major Stockholm was confirmed to take place in Avicii Arena in Stockholm, Sweden, between October 23 – November 7. The $2,000,000 CS:GO esports tournament will be held at the site, initially intended to host Dota 2 The International 10, which had to be moved to Romania due to COVID-19 concerns.

However, unlike its MOBA counterpart, CS:GO received a green light to host its premier event in the Scandinavian country. As a result, Sweden will host its first CS:GO Major since DreamHack Winter 2014, which took place in Jönköping.

The confirmation came after the Swedish government decided to ease pandemic-related restrictions on Tuesday, effectively removing the final hurdle that prevented CS:GO Major from being held in an indoor setting. In turn, the 2021 PGL Major Stockholm will run at full capacity, with a live audience.

The 2021 PGL Major will mark the first large-scale live event since the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020. What's more, it will be the first CS:GO Major tournament in over two years, with the previous – StarLadder Berlin Major – having taken place in September 2019 in Germany.

The ticket sale for the tournament will go live on Wednesday, September 22, which can be bought directly from Avicii Arena's official website. The organizers plan to sell all available tickets, filling the 14,000-seater arena for the playoffs, slated for November 4-7.

24 Teams and $2,000,000 Prize Pool

The 2021 PGL Major Stockholm will feature 24 CS:GO teams, who will compete for the lion's share of the $2,000,000 prize pool and the eternal glory that comes with winning a Major title. Depending on their regional rankings, attending teams will be split into three status groups – Contenders, Challengers, and Legends.

The tournament will kick off on Tuesday, October 26, with the first stage featuring 16 teams who hold Challengers or Contenders status. Eight teams with Legends status will advance into the tournament's second stage, leading to the playoffs at the Avicii Arena.

The final seeding for the tournament has yet to be finalized, as the teams still need to fight through their respective Regional Major Ranking tournaments. Still, we do know how many seeds each region has received for the $2,000,000 tournament.
