by Tit Krajnik on September 21, 2021

WePlay Esports announced the return of WePlay Academy League for its second season. The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournament is slated to take place on September 28 – November 14, with the grand finals moving to Kyiv, Ukraine.

WePlay Academy League Season 2 Is Here!

Following the success of the inaugural season of the CS:GO tournament, WePlay Esports decided to run it back with WePlay Academy League Season 2. The Ukrainian esports tournament organizers announced the details of the upcoming competition on Tuesday, September 21, unveiling slight format changes from the first season.

The academy tournament will feature the same eight academy CS:GO teams from the first season, who will compete for the lion’s share of the $100,000 prize pool. Like in the first season, the champions will take home the $45,000 winner’s share.

The inaugural season was won by mouz NXT, who defeated Young Ninjas in the finals 3-1. Fnatic’s academy roster, Fnatic Rising, placed in third, while BIG Academy landed in fourth.

VP.Prodigy, Astralis Talent, and Natus Vincere Junior crashed out of the Play-In stage, while FURIA Academy finished the online stage last with a 3-11 record.

Event Schedule

  • Group Stage – September 28 – October 3
  • Last Chance Group – October 7-9
  • LAN Finals – November 12-14

As an academy tournament, the teams must consist of players aged between 16-20 years old. Each team can have only one player who is aged 20 or over.

Changes to Online Stage Format

WePlay hasn’t made many changes to its tournament, however, we will see some adjustments to the online portion of the competition.

The online stage of the inaugural season was played out in a double round-robin format, with all matches played as best-of-one (Bo1). The top three teams advanced into the LAN Finals, while the fourth-seventh-placed teams proceeded into the Play-In stage.

There they competed in a single-elimination Bo3 gauntlet, with the winning team advancing into the LAN Finals. For the second season, WePlay Esports will introduce a different format for the online stage.

The eight participating teams will be split into two GSL groups of four teams with a Bo3 format in place. The winning team from each group will advance into the LAN Stage, while the second and third-place teams move into the “Last Chance” group.

The Last Chance group will feature four teams, who will compete in a double-elimination Bo3 format for the final two spots leading into the playoffs.

The online stage of WePlay Academy League Season 2 will run from September 28 – October 9. After that, the competition moves to the purposely built WePlay Esports Arena in Kyiv, Ukraine, for the LAN Stage, slated for November 12-14.
