Outriders - Review

A Perfect Looter Shooter?
Score: 4/5
Reviewed by Oliver VanDervoort on Xbox Series X/S - April 13, 2021

Perhaps the beginning of a flood of news games, Outriders has the edge by coming before any of them. Of course, that's not the only thing the looter shooter has going for it. The game stands out on its own, even if there were other new games on the market at the same time.

The game isn't perfect, in fact it has a few major flaws, but it more than makes up for those flaws with what it does very well. There's a reason that some people have said they are going to leave Destiny 2 behind in order to play this game. The biggest oddity about that is that this title isn't a live game.

While it does have multiplayer aspects to it, Outriders isn't a game like The Division 2 or Destiny 2. Once the story is over, the story is over. The good news is that there is plenty of story, especially with side quests to play.

Looter Shooter From Heaven

Any game that wants to stand out as a looter shooter, needs to make sure that the loot is worth getting. Outriders certainly hits the mark there. The nice thing is there all plenty of weapons and there is plenty of diversity.

When someone goes into battle, they are absolutely going to come out of it with plenty of loot. That doesn't just mean guns. Players will also get plenty of pants, boots and upper torso gear. They could also get some really great helmets.

That's the other thing that Outriders does well where a game like Marvel's Avengers fell flat. When users get this new loot, it actually changes the way their character looks. That's also where the game surprised me a bit. I like dressing up my guy and see him looking different when he goes from battle to battle.

People Can Fly did a great job making the suits look different and look very good. There's also the fact that every new gun packs quite a punch. And those guns pack enough of a different punch that it's fun to go and see what each one does.

Outriders also added a nice touch for when players get entirely too much gear. There are shops at every stop on the map where they can sell their excess gear. They can also buy new gear if the stuff they're finding out in the field isn't quite good enough.

The gear that can be bought at the shop isn't too expensive in order to load up. It's also good enough that it really does help the next battle and next area players need to clear. The loot is absolutely the best part of the game. Followed closely by the combat.

Evil Doers Have Some Originality

One of the most interesting things about Outriders is that it throws players for a bit of a loop when talking about the beginning of the game and the middle to the end.

Anyone who only plays the demo likely feels as though the enemies are a bit too unoriginal. It's true that the foot soldiers are hard to differentiate. No matter whose side they are supposed to be fighting on, they look very similar.

However, as you get further into the game, People Can Fly offers up some different looks and some different creatures that keeps the fight fresh. The developer also rolls out some level bosses that stand out from the troops in a nice way. There are also plenty of monsters on Enoch that that allow for a changeup. Alternating between taking on insurgents and other altereds, and the monsters that roam the alien world keep the combat fresh enough to keep coming back.

Missions Still Have Some Repetitiveness

While the combat stays fresh enough to keep going back, if there is one part that stands out in a negative way, is that there aren't enough different actual missions.

There are more than a few times where the point is to "clear out" the field. Other "fetch it" missions spend a bit too much time running to areas on the map, collecting something and then running back to the truck. The good news here is the game allows you to quick travel to most different cities or stops, so you aren’t spending all that much traveling. Still, the basic mechanics of the side missions especially could be varied a bit more.

There’s also the fact that while you quick travel whenever you get in the truck, I’d actually like to be able to drive that thing around more. Outriders allows you to put your own style on the truck, but that appears to mostly be to look at right before the screen loads the next stop.

Story Is Bad

There is one aspect of Outriders that needs to be quite a bit better. It happens to be the only thing keeping this game from being a five-star masterpiece. The cut scenes and dialogue, throughout the game is, quite simply, not up to par.

The beginning of the game is especially troublesome. To some degree, it feels like the story and voice work was an afterthought. Several of the characters feel like they’re paint by numbers. Others feel as though they are supposed to elicit an emotional response but they absolutely don’t.

The good news is that in the grand scheme of things, the game is plenty fun without being all that emotionally invested in the characters. That’s certainly not something that can be said about every game.
