Does Nintendo Know How to Make Rated-M Games?

Emio would be the latest rated M title since Bayonetta 3
by Natalie Collazo on July 15, 2024

A few days ago, Nintendo dropped an ominous trailer for a project called Emio for the Nintendo Switch. The trailer didn't feature anything that made players hang on to the edge of their seats. However, the caption #WhereIsEmio and the game's M rating are incredibly odd in terms of what players have learned about Nintendo. They don't do rated M games.

If you look back at Nintendo's history of releases, only seven games have made the M-rated cut: Eternal Darkness, Geist, Ninja Gaiden 3 on Wii U, Bayonetta 2, Devil's Third, Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, and Bayonetta 3. None of them were actually developed by Nintendo, meaning they've never dipped their toes into developing a game of the genre. However, that doesn't mean that they won't know how when the time comes.

Bloober Team is not the developer; many players speculated that they were behind the game. In fact, the trailer that Nintendo dropped does not mention that another developer is involved. Nintendo, from developer to publisher, is incredibly strict about how its games are presented. The fact that Nintendo didn't address another developer or company at all further proves that Nintendo is the developer behind the project.

Does Nintendo Know How to Make Horror Games?

Players won't know exactly if Nintendo can pull off the genre until the game comes out—or, at least, until a trailer is released that is less ominous than the one players were shown. However, the Fatal Frame franchise tends to be associated with Nintendo because of their most recent releases. Both Spirit Camera and Fatal Frame 2 Remake were released exclusively on the Wii systems, though Nintendo did not develop them. Regardless, that franchise is likely the standard that Nintendo has on horror.

The Fatal Frame franchise is more horror than anything, considering the gameplay is limited to camera shots and exploration in most series installments. Emio might fall into the same realm of gameplay, not featuring blood or other concepts that Nintendo is strictly against. As a result, their involvement as developer might not be seen as them facilitating violence in their games the way that other horror classics like Resident Evil and Silent Hill do.

While there isn't concrete proof that Nintendo can create a horror title (the Luigi's Mansion franchise doesn't count. Sorry), that doesn't mean that they can't successfully oversee one. While there are still skeptical players, Nintendo's dedication to quality will likely see through in the project.
