Bjergsen Leaves TSM, Looks To Return to Pro Play

Bjergsen starts a new chapter
by Tit Krajnik on October 29, 2021

The League of Legends Championship Series (LCS) franchise TSM announced the departure of their former player and coach, Søren "Bjergsen" Bjerg, who is looking to return to pro play. The Dane left the North American esports organization after eight seasons and is exploring his options for 2022.

Eight Seasons

The Dane, who coached TSM throughout the 2021 season and has previously spent seven seasons as their starting mid laner, is leaving the North American organization and will test the market as a free agent ahead of the 2022 season. The decision follows Bjergsen's discussions with TSM, who wanted to retain its iconic player, but the two sides haven't reached an agreement.

Bjergsen joined TSM in 2013 after spending less than a year competing in the European leagues. Despite his lack of experience as a pro player at the time, the Dane quickly made a name for himself and eventually replaced former pro player and TSM co-owner Andy "Reginald" Dinh as the team's new mid laner.

Throughout his eight-year stint with TSM, Bjergsen has helped the organization win six LCS championships, IEM Katowice in 2015, and collected four MVPs – the second most in the LCS history.

Despite his domestic success, Bjergsen hasn't achieved much on the international stage and decided to hang up his mouse and keyboard following TSM's abysmal run at the 2020 LoL World Championship. The Dane instead transitioned to coaching and took over as TSM's head coach for the 2021 season.

Things, however, did not go as planned for Bjergsen and his team. Despite TSM's strong start to the 2021 season, placing second in the LCS Spring regular season and third in the Mid-Season Showdown, TSM failed to deliver when it mattered.

The team placed fourth in the LCS 2021 Championship and were denied a spot at the 2021 LoL World Championship.

Return To Pro Play

Following TSM's disappointing end to the 2021 season, Bjergsen decided to step down as a coach and look for opportunities to return to pro play. The rumours of Bjergsen's return to competitive LoL surfaced in September.

However, his decision wasn't confirmed until Thursday, October 28, when TSM revealed that Dane is leaving the North American esports organization and will explore the market as a free agent.

Bjergsen's next team is undecided; however, it was reported that he is highly sought-after by many LCS and LoL European Championship (LEC) teams. Although we won't get a definitive answer to where Bjergsen will continue his career in 2022, a few teams are getting tossed around as his potential next stop.

Cloud9 made the list of the teams Bjergsen could play for in 2022, following the announcement that their star mid laner, Luka "Perkz" Perkovi?, is leaving the LCS and is looking to return to Europe. Some rumours also suggest Bjergsen could join Team Liquid as their starting mid laner to replace Nicolaj "Jensen" Jensen, who would transition to the ADC role.

However, the most exciting reports suggest that Bjergsen could return to Europe and join one of the LEC teams. While very few top-tier League of Legends teams need a starting mid laner, both Team Vitality and the BDS Esports could benefit from fielding the Danish veteran.

Bjergsen's announcement of his intentions to return to pro play, however, is only the tip of the iceberg of what is shaping up to be one of the biggest and most exciting offseasons to date. With the League of Legends World Championship moving to North America in 2022, many LCS teams are looking to invest heavily into top-tier talent in a bid to compete for the Summoner's Cup on their home soil.

We're still very early into the offseason, and with the 2022 season not starting until January, we might have to wait for a bit longer before we will answer where the Danish LoL veteran will continue his career.
