Bjergsen Reportedly Returning to Pro Play

Six-time LCS champion is reportedly exploring his options to return to pro play
by Tit Krajnik on September 13, 2021

According to recent reports, Søren "Bjergsen" Bjerg will return to the professional League of Legends in 2022, ending his one-year retirement, which he spent as a head coach of TSM. It's unclear where the Dane will continue his career, with a move to the European league not out of the question.

Bjergsen Returns To The Summoner's Rift

One of the most well-known League of Legends players, Bjergsen, is reportedly returning back to pro play for the 2022 season. Although the rumours have yet to be confirmed, reputable sources have established that Bjergsen is looking for a way to return to the Summoner's Rift after a one-year hiatus.

Bjergsen is widely regarded as one of the best players in the LoL Championship Series (LCS) history and an iconic member of TSM, who he joined in November 2013. The Dane has since remained with the team as a mid laner and became a part-owner of the North American esports organization in October 2019.

Despite his domestic success, having led TSM to six domestic titles, Bjergsen decided to retire as a pro player in October 2020, following TSM's humiliating performance at the 2020 LoL World Championship. The team went 0-6 in the group stage and became a laughing stock of the LoL scene.

Following his retirement, Bjergsen announced that he is transitioning to the position of head coach of TSM, who he led through the 2021 season, albeit without the expected success. Even though TSM finished the spring season in third place, they've only managed fourth in the LCS 2021 Championship, thus failing to qualify for the 2021 LoL World Championship in Reykjavik for the third time since 2017.

Europe Is Not Out Of The Question

Bjergsen is said to return to pro play after his contract with TSM expires, on November 17, albeit it's still unclear where his career path will take him. As one of the most established mid laners in the Western LoL esport scene, Bjergsen will likely have plenty of offers on the table, which could see him either stay in the North American league or move overseas and re-enter the European scene for the first time since 2013.

As a part-owner of TSM, expecting Bjergsen to continue his professional career with the organization he has spent the last seven years with would make the most sense. However, that would require TSM to part ways with their current mid laner, Tristan "PowerOfEvil" Schrage.

Alternatively, Bjergsen could join an LoL European Championship (LEC) team and return to Europe for the first time since 2013, when he represented Ninjas in Pyjamas.

The latter scenario seems like the most likely to occur, with sources confirming that Bjergsen is not ready to re-join TSM as their starting mid laner and will instead test out the free agency waters for the first time in his professional career.

Outside of Europe's top teams in MAD Lions, Fnatic, Rogue, and G2 Esports, almost all squads would be happy to sign Bjergsen as he looks to enter his 10th year as a professional player. Out of all teams in the league, Team BDS - who have acquired the LEC spot from Schalke 04 Esports and will make their debut appearance in the league in 2022 - could offer the 25-year-old Dane a perfect opportunity to relaunch his professional career.

The LoL scene is entering its final stage of the season, with the 2021 LoL World Championship, while the domestic leagues won't resume until January 2022. This gives Bjergsen more than enough time to weigh his options and decide which path to take.
