Astralis Replace Lucky With Farlig

Farlig takes over as the starting AWPer of Astralis
by Tit Krajnik on February 22, 2022

On Tuesday, February 22, Astralis announced the signing of  Asger "Farlig" Jensen, who joins the Danish Counter-Strike: Global Offensive to take over for Philip "Lucky" Ewald. The roster change follows Astralis' disappointing performance at IEM Katowice 2022, where the Danes placed seventh-eighth.

More Changes In The Danish Squad

The most recent change in the Astralis squad comes just three months after the Danish esports organization signed Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke and Benjamin "blameF" Bremer from Complexity to form a new core of players. Although the new-look roster enjoyed a solid start, Astralis quickly found themselves struggling.

Shortly after forming a new roster, spearheaded by k0nfig and blameF, Astralis impressed with a third-place finish at BLAST Premier: Fall Finals 2021. But unfortunately, the team couldn't keep their momentum up and crashed out early from the following four tournaments.

In December, Astralis attended Intel Extreme Masters XVI – Winter and the BLAST Premier: World Final 2021 but could only manage a ninth-12th and a fifth-sixth place finish. Unfortunately, things did not improve in 2022. Astralis first dropped out of Funspark ULTI 2021 in the second round of the playoffs and added another disappointing performance at BLAST Premier: Spring Groups 2022, where the Danes lost two of the three bouts.

Most recently, Astralis also failed to show up at the IEM Katowice 2022, where they got eliminated in seventh-eighth place, marking the team's fourth consecutive tournament in which they crashed out early.

Farlig Takes Over For Lucky

Farlig was announced as the newest addition to Astralis on Tuesday. The 22-year-old AWPer was last seen competing with FunPlus Phoenix, who he was a part of since January 2021, but found himself sidelined in November when FunPlus Phoenix disbanded their CS:GO division.

During his time at FunPlus Phoenix, Farlig has posted solid performance numbers, averaging 1.07 ratings across the ten months he has spent with the Chinese esports organization. Still, he could not find a new home until now.

Farlig joins Astralis to replace Lucky, who joined the Danish team in August 2021 but has struggled to make much of an impact. During his seven-month tenure with Astralis, Lucky has averaged a poor 0.95 performance rating and was particularly disappointing at the IEM Katowice, with a 0.87 performance rating.

"The change means that we have to bench Philip "Lucky" Ewald. For 7 months he has worked with himself and the team, but, unfortunately, and despite all his and the team's work, we have not been able to get the best out of him," said Kasper Hvidt, Director of Sports at Astralis.

"Philip is a cool and very well-liked guy with some obvious skills we have not managed to unfold. He will stay on contract for now, and no matter what happens, I am sure we will hear more from "Lucky" in the future."

Although the whole squad struggled to deliver in Poland, Astralis felt like a change in the AWP position was needed to step up and re-establish themselves as one of the world's top teams.

"Asger [Farlig] possesses many of the qualities we need on the team: He is an aggressive impact player who's not afraid to take on the fight and take initiative," added Hvidt.

"He creates space for his teammates, while at the same time contributing to the team dynamics by being the person he is."

Farlig will make his debut for Astralis on Wednesday, March 30, when Astralis meet with Evil Geniuses in the opening round of ESL Pro League Season 15.
