"Persona 5 Removed from PlayStation Plus Collection

Players have until May 11th to add Persona 5 to their library
by Joe Wilcock on April 04, 2022

As Sony starts gearing up for their new PlayStation Plus subscription service, the first game from the Collection hits the cutting room floor. Persona 5, developed by Atlus, will be unavailable for download as of May 11th 2022. A shame too, as the Persona franchise is a pillar of the Sony exclusive lineup and the 5th entry is one of the most unique games on the market.

Originally released in 2016, Persona 5 has since become a critical darling, garnering 10/10s from several outlets. Despite this, Sony recently announced, via their PlayStation blog, that Persona 5 will be leaving the PlayStation Plus Collection. April's free games were revealed in the same post, but no more information was shed on the reasoning behind pulling Persona from the selection.

Reading between the lines, it can be speculated that there is no longer much benefit from offering free games in that capacity anymore. Especially considering the news that Sony will be launching a 3 tiered subscription service. PlayStation Plus ($60 per year), PlayStation Plus Extra ($100 per year) and the most lucrative model, PlayStation Plus Premium ($120 per year). The latter of which will be offering “340 additional games” so Sony would much prefer having their big hitters locked into that service rather than offering them for free for base PlayStation Plus subscribers.

The future of the PlayStation Plus Collection is unclear. Had they swapped Persona 5 with another game, Horizon: Zero Dawn or Ghost of Tsushima for example, then we could assume that it can offer different games on rotation. However, Sony has been public before about not wanting to add games to it. Talking to GQ, the PlayStation President and EO Jim Ryan, stated that he wanted to “wait and see how the world receives the Plus Collection”, before making the decision to add games. Interested more in the data, regarding “which games are played and how much they’re played”.

At any rate, Persona’s eviction is ominous, to say the least. If this proves to be the precursor to the demise of the Collection, then this is sad news indeed. Not least of all because Persona 5 is phenomenal (and if you haven’t already, you should play it now before it expires), but because the Collection is a fantastic service that offers some of the best PlayStation titles. Despite Persona’s omission, the list is still healthy for now:

- Batman: Arkham Knight
- Battlefield 1
- Bloodborne
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (Zombie Chronicles Edition)
- Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy
- Days Gone
- Detroit: Become Human
- Fallout 4
- Final Fantasy 15
- God of War
- Infamous Second Son
- Monster Hunter World
- Mortal Kombat X
- Ratchet and Clank
- Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
- The Last Guardian
- The Last of Us Remastered
- Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
- Until Dawn

It bears repeating that Persona 5 is a top-class game and is well worth a play if you haven’t already.
