Gaming Giant Nintendo Will Not Be Attending Gamescom 2022

Nintendo will be missing the biggest gaming event of the year.
by Natalie Collazo on June 03, 2022

Gamescom 2022 is set to take place in late August, but Nintendo will reportedly bow out to focus on a Nintendo Switch Road Trip tour around the same time.

Considering the cancellation of this year's E3 event, Gamescom is set to be the largest video game event of the year. The event is held in Koelnmesse in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany yearly. However, it's been officially revealed that gaming giant Nintendo will be skipping out on the event this year. In a correspondence to Games Wirtschaft, a German gaming website, it was revealed that the company will instead focus on numerous Nintendo Switch events happening throughout the country.

“Events that have been firmly scheduled so far include roadshows with our Airstreamer [tour bus] and our [VW] Bulli, for example at locations such as the SWR Summer Festival and the Stuttgart Children and Youth Festival. For Japan and video game fans, we have decided to participate in the Main Matsuri Japan Festival in Frankfurt as well as the DoKomi in Düsseldorf and the AnimagiC in Mannheim. Further tour stops and activities are being planned. We look forward to seeing our fans again at many regional events.”

Gamescom 2022 will take place between August 24-28 and will be both on-site as well as online. Developers and publishers use the event to showcase upcoming projects and this year doesn't look to be any different. But, with the news of Nintendo not joining in on the fun this year, there will be one less thing to be excited about. Nintendo has a lot to look forward to this year including the release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet this fall. Though, it's very likely that they have separate events planned for these titles altogether. As of right now, only a handful of publishers have confirmed their attendance for Gamescom 2022 including THQ Nordic, Bandai Namco, and Koch Media so there's still a lot to look forward to.
