VCT In Danger Of Missing LoL World Championship 2022

Vietnam might miss out on LoL Worlds once again due to visa issues
by Tit Krajnik on September 11, 2022

According to recent reports, the Vietnam Championship Series (VCS) League of Legends team GAM Esports might not be able to travel to the United States for the LoL World Championship 2022.

As revealed on Saturday, September 10, VCS Summer 2022 champions and Vietnam’s top seed, Gam Esports, declined their U.S. visa applications weeks before the LoL World Championship 2022. However, GAM is not the only team from the region that failed to get their visas cleared, with Saigon Buffalo also reportedly not having secured a visa for Mexico.

Shortly after the news broke, Riot Games’ global head Naz Alethana stated that the team is working with the government reps to do whatever is needed to get GAM Esports to Worlds. And even though GAM still have two more weeks to re-apply for the visa, it seems likely that Vietnam won’t have any LoL teams attending the international tournament for the third year.

VCS hasn’t been able to attend LoL World Championship since 2019, mainly due to the COVID pandemic. Moreover, the only international tournament Vietnamese LoL teams had participated in since 2019 was the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational, where Saigon Buffalo reached the Rumble Stage.

If Vietnam teams end up unable to secure visas, it would likely mean that Riot Games would have to re-adjust the tournament format and schedule, but it’s still unclear which team will take their spot. But considering how Riot have approached this issue in previous years, it’s likely that one of the major regions would gain an extra slot – most likely the host region, LoL Championship Series.

This would potentially mean that the LCS would get its fourth seed for the tournament, as many as the LoL Pro League (LPL), Champions Korea (LCK), and the European Championship (LEC). Such a solution would see Team Liquid receive a bye into the LoL Worlds Play-In stage after missing out on qualifying for the event with a defeat against Evil Geniuses (2-3) in the third round of the LCS 2022 Playoffs.

As it stands now, it’s unclear whether VCS will manage to secure visas for their teams or how Riot Games will approach solving the problem if GAM Esports aren’t allowed to travel to Mexico. But with LoL Worlds fast approaching, we can expect to get an answer in the coming weeks.

The League of Legends World Championship 2022 kicks off on September 29, with the first round of the Play-In stage.
