Witcher 4 Won’t Release Until At Least 2025

A decade could elapse between Witcher 3 and 4
by Joe Wilcock on October 09, 2022

CD Projekt Red’s reputation is on the fritz, they’re in dire need of a win and fast. Cyberpunk 2077 is slowly but surely getting to where it should be, but for some, the damage is already done. Fan’s attention naturally turns towards the next Witcher title, which CD Projekt Red joint CEO Adam Kicinski has confirmed won’t be ready for at least another three years.

As reported by IGN, Kicinki spoke about CD Projekt Red's upcoming projects in an investor call this week, offering some explanation for The Witcher 4's, or Polaris as it has been codenamed, delay.

"For Polaris we are preparing technology. This is the first project to be released on the new engine, Unreal Engine 5, [so] there is a need for some extra work making this technology. For this project, for sure we need some extra effort to deliver."

- Adam Kicinki, CD Projekt Red Joint CEO

Although Kicinki has given a release window of 2025 at the very earliest, he did also explain that when Polaris launches, we could get a Witcher game every three years thereafter. This is because they would have already established their foundation on Unreal Engine 5 by that point and the development of future titles, of which there are many, will be a lot smoother.

There are reportedly three Witcher projects in the works. Project Sirius is the first, being touted as a fresh and innovative take on the Witcher series. Project Polaris, the aforementioned Witcher 4 that will look to kickstart the series off once more. And finally, Project Canis Majoris, a story-centric open-world RPG that will expand the Witcher lore.

Aside from the Witcher franchise, CD Projekt Red is also working on a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel codenamed Project Orion. It is supposedly due to release anytime after the Phantom Liberty Expansion. The Polish company have an undisclosed game in the pipeline too, dubbed Project Hadar, it is still in its conceptual phase and will be an all-new IP.
