Evil Geniuses Set To Release Its Dota 2 Roster For 2023 Season

Evil Geniuses is reportedly leaving North American Dota 2 scene
by Tit Krajnik on November 01, 2022

According to recent reports, Evil Geniuses will release its entire Dota 2 roster ahead of the 2023 season, shaking the Dota 2 scene to its core. Moreover, the esports organization is supposedly leaving the North American Dota 2 scene – for the first time in EG's history.

As reported on Monday, October 31, Evil Geniuses is getting ready for a major change of its Dota 2 division, as the North American esports organization is set to release its entire roster and move regions. If the reports are correct, Evil Geniuses will move away from its core of Artour "Arteezy" Babaev and Andreas "Cr1t-" Nielsen and move its operations to South America.

Besides parting ways with its long-standing members in Cr1t- and Arteezy, who have been with the organization since 2016, Evil Geniuses also plans to release the rest of its roster, including Abed "Abed" Yusop, Egor "Nightfall" Grigorenko, and Tal "Fly" Aizik.

The news comes following Evil Geniuses' fairly successful campaign in 2022. The team kicked off the year with a third-place finish in the first DPC NA Tour, adding a silver medal from the Tour 1 Regional Final and a title from DPC NA Tour 2: Division I.

Despite Evil Geniuses' regional success – adding another domestic title in Tour 3: Division I – the squad failed to show up internationally. Evil Geniuses crashed out of ESL One Stockholm 2022 in 13th place and finished their PGL Arlington Major in ninth-12th.

Yet the result that might have led Evil Geniuses to restructure its Dota 2 division came in October when Evil Geniuses failed to deliver at The International 2022. Fly and his crew enjoyed a solid start to the season-culminating event, finishing Group A in first place with a 7-0-2 record.

But despite a promising start, EG fell apart in the knockout stage, losing back-to-back series against two LATAM teams in Thunder Awaken and beastcoast, who eliminated Evil Geniuses in the ninth-12th place. Interestingly, Evil Geniuses now plans to move its Dota 2 operations to South America, where the prominent NA esports organization is supposedly nearing the signing of the Thunder Awake roster.

Led by Farith "Matthew" Huamancaja, Thunder Awaken ended the 2022 season as the strongest team from the region, finishing the year with an impressive fifth-sixth-place finish at The International 2022. The team had suffered just two defeats in Singapore, against Team Liquid and the eventual champions, Team Secret.

If the reports are correct and if Evil Geniuses' plan to acquire Thunder Awake roster comes through, it will heavily shake up the North American and South American Dota 2 scene, as it would free up five elite Dota 2 players for other teams to pursue, while also leaving a prominent SA esports organization in search of a new roster.

As it stands now, Evil Geniuses have yet to confirm its intentions to release its Dota 2 roster and move regions, but we can expect the announcement to surface in the coming days.
