Alliance Complete 2023 Dota 2 Lineup With Familiar Faces

Alliance brings back former players for the 2023 DPC season
by Tit Krajnik on December 03, 2022

Swedish esports organization, Alliance, announced its 2023 Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) roster on Friday, December 2. The new lineup will feature familiar faces returning to the organization after one year.

On Friday, Alliance unveiled its Dota 2 roster for the next season, welcoming back Simon "Handsken" Haag and Gustav "s4" Magnusson, who'll return to the team's helm after one season with goonsquad. The Swedish duo will team up with Charlie "CharlieDota" Arat, Ng "ChYuan" Kee Chyuan, and Remus "ponlo" Goh, who joined Alliance from goonsquad, Fnatic, and Team Aster, respectively. The roster changes come three months after Alliance released its entire lineup.

This will mark s4's fourth stint with Alliance since he initially joined the organization in 2013 and led Alliance to The International title. Moreover, the current lineup will be the third iteration of Alliance's roster s4 will lead as a team captain.

"I'm excited to be back in Alliance working with all the people and staff behind the scenes and especially with this new lineup that I think has a lot of potential going forward," said s4.

"Since we are coming from 2 different regions, you can expect some fun dota from us starting in division 2 while we fight our way up. Even though fans' expectations are low right now, my goal is to change that and go far next year."

While this marks s4's fourth stint with Alliance, it will also mark Handsken's third. The 28-year-old first joined Alliance in 2016 and again in 2019. Meanwhile, CharlieDota, Chyuan, and ponlo will play under the Alliance's banner for the first time in their career. Still, while CharlieDota will play for a new organization, he already has experience competing alongside s4 and Handsken from his time at goonsquad.

By rebuilding its roster, Alliance will hope to recreate their success from 2021, when they last achieved something of note. Even though the Swedish organization didn't win any big events that year, Alliance still placed second in DreamLeague Season 14 DPC EU Upper Division, claimed silver from ESL One Summer 2021, and reached ninth-12th at The International – which the team missed entirely in 2022.

This also might be s4's final ride with Alliance, according to the announcement, which read that s4 will spend "the last of his competitive years with us" before he transitions to Alliance's performance team. Whether this will be a successful last ride is anyone's guess, but we won't have to wait long to see Alliance in action.

The 2023 DPC season kicks off on December 11 with Winter Tour open qualifiers, followed by closed qualifiers on December 19-22, and the opening round of Division I (Jan 9) and Division II (30), where Allianced will begin their 2023 season.
