Modern Warfare 2 Goes Free-To-Play (For A Limited Time)

Activision decided to make Modern Warfare 2 free-to-play for one week
by Tit Krajnik on April 19, 2023

On Tuesday, April 18, Activision announced that it's running a multiplayer "free access" week, giving fans of the Call of Duty a chance to try out Modern Warfare 2 free of charge. The free access week will open up most of the games to the public, with some exceptions, namely Free For All and Search and Destroy.

The Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 free access week starts today, on Thursday, April 19, at 10 am PT/1 pm ET/pm BST, opening up most of the game and its game modes to the non-paying public. The promotion will run until April 26.

The promotion will include multiplayer maps and 12 game modes, allowing the public to check out all the changes and new maps added to the game with Season 3, including Pelayo's Lighthouse.

The 12 game modes that will be available during the free access week include:

  • All or Nothing
  • Domination
  • Gunfight
  • Ground War
  • Grind
  • Gun Game
  • Hardpoint
  • Infected
  • Invasion
  • Kill Confirmed
  • One in the Chamber
  • Team Deathmatch

Although the list of available game modes doesn't include Free For All and Search & Destroy, it does feature two highly popular game modes in Gunfight and Ground War, and since it's free, we can't complain.

The 12 available game modes will be spread across ten maps, some exclusive to certain game modes.

  • Ground War & Invasion: Santa Sena
  • 6v6 maps: Farm 18, Shoot, Pelayo's Lighthouse, House, Shipment, Dome, Himmelmat Expo
  • Gunfight: Alley, Blacksite, Exhibit, Shipment

The free access promotion comes shortly after the release of MW2 Season 3, which included new weapons, new maps, new operators and many other changes to the game. And it's pretty obvious that the promotion is intended to showcase all the changes to the new potential customer base, as Activision struggles to keep players interested in MW 2 and Warzone 2.

When Modern Warfare 2 launched in late October, it peaked at nearly 490k players and averaged between 250-400k players, but the numbers have since been steadily dropping. As of April, the average player count on Steam was just over 86,000, which is already a drop from March (96k).

Whether Season 3 will bring back players remains to be seen, but fans of the franchise can now try out the game with all of its changes for free and decide whether MW2 is worth their time and money.
