FIFA 23 Becomes The Best Selling Game Of The Franchise

The final game of the franchise breaks all previous records
by Tit Krajnik on May 10, 2023

As confirmed by EA Sports, FIFA 23 became the best-selling game in the franchise's history, breaking all previous records by a large margin. Ironically, FIFA 23's success comes just months after EA Sports decided that it would be the last game of the FIFA franchise before the complete rebranding of the soccer sim.

On Tuesday, May 9, EA released its fiscal reports for the full year, which ended on March 31, 2023. According to the report, the EA's Q4 net bookings rose by 11% year-on-year to $1.946 billion, largely thanks to FIFA 23.

EA's live services and other bookings for Q4 earned $1.622 billion, which is a 9% year-on-year increase and 83% of total bookings. But most importantly, FIFA 23 Q4 net bookings grew by 31% year-on-year and surpassed lifetime sales of EA Sports FIFA 22, becoming the most successful launch in franchise history.

Other notable games which contributed to EA's Q4 numbers include Apex Legends, which proved to be a massive success following the launch of Season 16, averaging a 20% increase in peak weekly active users compared to the previous season. Sims 4, on the other side, amassed over 70 million players.

FIFA 23's success comes just months after EA decided to rebrand and reboot the game after EA parted ways with licencing partner FIFA. As a result, FIFA will rebrand as EA Sports FC. EA confirmed that the new franchise would include 19,000 licenced players, 30 leagues, 700 teams, and over 300 football partners.

"Our players want us to expand into the digital ecosystem more broadly. Our fans are telling us they want us to go and participate in that space. Our FIFA licence has actually precluded us from doing a lot of this stuff," said EA CEO Andrew Wilson.

"Next year, EA Sports FC will become the future of football from EA Sports. Alongside our 300+ license partners across the sport, we're ready to take global football experiences to new heights on behalf of all football fans around the world."

EA has yet to unveil when EA Sports FC will release but shared the release window, which is expected to happen sometime in Q2 of 2024. In other words, between August and October 2023 – following the same format as FIFA release dates.
