Mortal Kombat Confirms Franchise Reboot & Microtransactions

Mortal Kombat reboots with Mortal Kombat 1, which will come with microtransactions.
by Tit Krajnik on May 18, 2023

After 30 years, Mortal Kombat has reached the end of the road and will go back to the beginning of the franchise with Mortal Kombat 1. The reboot was confirmed on Thursday, May 18, unveiling the new Mortal Kombat title and some of its features.

NetherRealm Studios officially confirmed previously teased Mortal Kombat 1 release on Thursday, May 18. The game will mark a rebirth of the series, featuring classic MK characters, core fighting systems, and game modes; however, according to the trailer, its storyline will be a bit different.

In the trailer, Sub-Zero and Scorpion are no longer enemies but consider themselves as brothers, which marks a massive twist in Mortal Kombat's story. It also raises questions about what else will change with Mortal Kombat 1 - even though the story twist makes sense and was expected by the fans following the surprising ending to Mortal Kombat 11.

NetherRealm Studios has confirmed a few other interesting details about the new release, including the base roster, consisting of Liu Kang, Scorpion, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, and Mileena. Those who pre-order the game will also be able to play as Shang Tsung.

Other exciting details about Mortal Kombat 1 were announced in the game's FAQ, which revealed the rollback netcode and Dragon Krystals as an in-game currency which essentially confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 would have microtransactions.

The exact purpose of Dragon Krystals is unknown, but it is fair to assume that Dragon Krystals will be used to purchase various in-game skins for Mortal Kombat fighters and other cosmetic elements. Like its purpose, we also have no confirmation about the price of Dragon Krystals, which will be obtainable by purchasing Premium Edition (1,250) and Mortal Kombat 1 Collector's Edition (2,700 Dragon Krystals).

Mortal Kombat 1 will release on September 19, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Meanwhile, those who pre-order the 12th game in the series will get access to the MK1 beta, scheduled to launch sometime in August 2023.
