Blizzard Disables Uber Unique Drops Due to Bug

Shako is a rare drop again
by Tit Krajnik on July 07, 2023

Blizzard recently released Diablo 4 Update 1.0.4, which came with a bug that massively increased the drop chance of the Harlequin Crest helmet from Helltide Chests. To fix the issue, which would have a huge impact on the in-game economy, Blizzard jumped in and disabled the drop entirely, but those who were quick enough might be allowed to keep the ultra-rare drops.

Diablo 4 is just over two weeks from the start of Season 1, yet even one month into the game’s release, Blizzard is still battling various in-game issues and bugs. The most notable bug came with update 1.0.4, which made some of the game’s rarest drops very common, including the infamous Shako helmet.

As found out by players very quickly after the update went live, the Harlequin Crest helmet from Helltide Chests had a surprisingly high drop, making it very easy to farm. The issue arose with the update, which had an unwelcome effect, massively increasing the drop chance.

This wouldn’t be a big issue if the Shako helmet wasn’t an Ultra-Rare Unique item, which is the rarest quality available in the game. And since Diablo 4 runs on its living economy, having ultra-rare items drop too frequently can lead to huge problems.

Fortunately, Blizzard was relatively quick in disabling the drop until the issue gets fixed, making obtaining Shako helm difficult again. But while Blizzard was quick to reach, many players had already received the item, which begs the question of whether they’ll be allowed to keep it or will Blizzard purge all Harlequin Crest helmets from the server.

“We have temporarily disabled Uber Uniques from dropping in-game while we address an issue with Helltide Chest drops. Players will not be able to obtain the 6 Uber Unique items until a hotfix which we expect to be implemented on Friday afternoon Pacific Time. Other unique items will still be available from these chests.”

Blizzard has yet to comment on what the plans are with the items that are already in the game. A purge would be an option, or alternatively, Blizzard could nerf the helm, making it less strong and therefore minimizing the effect on the economy the large influx of the Shako helmed might have.
