Xbox Announces Official Acquisition of Activision Blizzard King

It's time to celebrate!
by Natalie Collazo on October 13, 2023

It's finally official; Microsoft has officially acquired Activision Blizzard King after a year-long discussion about the parameters in which they would fit in the gaming industry. The news was shared by Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, in a blog post where he discussed the future of the company with the new acquisition.

"We love gaming. We play games, create games, and know first-hand how much gaming means to all of us as individuals and collectively, as a community. And today, we officially welcome Activision Blizzard and their teams to Xbox."

"For the millions of fans who love Activision, Blizzard, and King games, we want you to know that today is a good day to play. You are the heart and soul of these franchises, and we are honored to have you as part of our community. Whether you play on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, PC or mobile, you are welcome here – and will remain welcome, even if Xbox isn’t where you play your favorite franchise. Because when everyone plays, we all win. We believe our news today will unlock a world of possibilities for more ways to play. Thank you for the ongoing support. We have so much more to come in the months ahead – I’m excited for the future and cannot wait to share it with you."

There has been much discussion and even more debates about whether or not the deal should go through. Many believe that Microsoft having ownership over so many large, AAA studios would make them a monopoly within the gaming industry, especially since they also dominate the PC market with the Windows software.

Much of Microsoft's discussions on the topic were to be highly critical of how gamers will view them after the acquisition. They realize that if they were to suddenly make all of the games now under their belt exclusive to their platforms, there would be millions of dissatisfied customers around the world. Fortunately, it seems as though the company will be taking its new titles including the Call of Duty franchise and the World of Warcraft series and ensuring that they will still be available for everyone.
