Pete Hines Retires from Bethesda Softworks

He retires after dedicating 24 years to the company
by Natalie Collazo on October 16, 2023

Beloved video game figure Pete Hines, known best as SVP, Head of Publishing for Bethesda Softworks, has announced his retirement after 24 years with the company. It's hard to see such a prolific figure go, as it seems like he's always there to revel in the excitement of whatever it is that Bethesda announces next. We personally saw the announcement via a LinkedIn update where he wrote an update discussing his time with the company. He also made the same announcement on his official Twitter/X page.

For over 23 years, Hines has served as the Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications, where he oversaw a wide variety of projects. Alongside Todd Howard, Hines played an important role in the growth of Bethesda Softworks and more popularly, their acquisition by Microsoft. Their most recent release, Starfield, saw wide commercial popularity and a first-hand look at what a partnership between the two companies can offer players.

For just about a year, Pete Hines has worked as the Head of Global Publishing where he has stayed until now, his retirement. In that role, he was just as outspoken as he always was about Bethesda's games, even issuing an apology and reassuring players that their latest release, Redfall, would become the game that players had been expecting since release.

What's interesting about this announcement is that it comes just days after Microsoft announced its official acquisition of Activision Blizzard in a record $69 billion deal. It's unlikely that the two had anything to do with one another, but it's interesting that they both happened in the same week.
