Disney and Epic Games Set to Create a 'Persistent Universe'

Two entertainment juggernauts team up, and not for the first timeĀ
by Joe Wilcock on February 08, 2024

Disney and Epic Games have announced a significant collaboration, marking Disney's largest venture into the gaming realm to date. The partnership, revealed on February 7th, will entail the creation of new games and an entertainment universe integrating Disney's extensive array of franchises with Epic Games' Fortnite platform.

Disney CEO Robert Iger expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that it presents substantial growth opportunities for the company. He emphasized the intention to provide fans with innovative ways to engage with Disney's beloved characters and stories.

“Our exciting new relationship with Epic Games will bring together Disney’s beloved brands and franchises with the hugely popular Fortnite in a transformational new games and entertainment universe.
This marks Disney’s biggest entry ever into the world of games and offers significant opportunities for growth and expansion. We can’t wait for fans to experience the Disney stories and worlds they love in groundbreaking new ways.”

- Robert Iger, Disney CEO

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney echoed Iger's sentiments, highlighting Disney's early recognition of the potential synergy between their respective worlds. Sweeney emphasized the aim to establish an interconnected ecosystem that bridges the Disney and Fortnite communities.

“Disney was one of the first companies to believe in the potential of bringing their worlds together with ours in Fortnite, and they use Unreal Engine across their portfolio.
Now we’re collaborating on something entirely new to build a persistent, open and interoperable ecosystem that will bring together the Disney and Fortnite communities.”

- Tim Sweeney, Epic CEO

This collaboration is not entirely unprecedented, as Fortnite has previously hosted themed events featuring Disney's Star Wars and Marvel properties. Notably, Fortnite's Nexus War event in 2020, set in the Marvel universe, attracted a considerable player base.

Despite Disney's reputation primarily as a film and merchandise producer, the company has maintained involvement in the gaming industry. Surprisingly, licensed Disney games garnered over 150 award nominations and wins in 2023, with notable successes such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 receiving multiple Game of the Year nominations.

As part of the collaboration, Disney will invest $1.5 billion in Epic Games, solidifying their commitment to the partnership. The joint venture aims to create a transformative gaming and entertainment universe, leveraging the popularity of Fortnite and Disney's extensive portfolio of brands.

Details regarding specific projects or timelines for the collaboration remain undisclosed. However, both companies have indicated that the venture will be a multiyear undertaking.

Epic Games has recently introduced various innovative features within Fortnite, such as LEGO Fortnite, Fortnite Festival, and Rocket Racing, all of which have been well-received by players.

Disney's collaboration with Epic Games represents a significant foray into the gaming industry, leveraging the strengths of both companies to create new and engaging experiences for fans. While the full extent of the partnership's impact remains to be seen, it signals a strategic move by Disney to expand its presence in the ever-evolving world of gaming.
