Blizzard Makes Important Changes to WoW Plunderstorm

More Plunder for everyone!
by Tit Krajnik on March 21, 2024

World of Warcraft Plunderstorm was released on Tuesday, March 19, and just a day later, Blizzard announced the first hotfix with a few impactful changes. The adjustments mainly affect the amount of plunder players will receive, addressing the necessary grind to reach higher levels of Renown.

The time-limited event, which shipped along with the secretive 10.2.6 patch, introduced something new to the World of Warcraft universe – a battle royale game. The mode quickly caught on among the WoW player base, but below the exciting gameplay, there were also some issues, mainly concerning the slow process of collecting Plunder.

That was addressed with the most recent hotfix.

Blizzard Hotfixes WoW Plunderstorm

The recent hotfix, which was released on March 20, introduced four big changes to World of Warcraft Plunderstorm, including:

  • Plunder dropped by other players significantly increased.
  • Plunder from non-player enemies increased by 50 percent.
  • Plunder from golden chests doubled.
  • Top placement in a match now rewards 500 Plunder (was 100)

In a Blue Post, WoW developer Kurbeegold explained that the changes were made after Blizzard listened to players’ feedback on how they could improve the experience. And from the feedback received, the biggest criticism was about the slow process of earning reputation.

“We see that you care deeply about preserving the experience like we do, but you also feel that earning rewards should happen more quickly. And we agree.”

Plunder is the most important currency in WoW Plunderstorm because it dictates how much reputation you gain with the new Keg Leg’s Crew faction. Players can collect Plunder by killing NPCs, opening chests, and killing enemy players who drop Plunder they’ve collected throughout the match.

While players don’t lose the Plunder they’ve accumulated, they still drop the same amount to those who kill them. This incentivizes PvP action in the game mode, and with the recent changes, WoW Plunderstorm will be even more rewarding to those who aren’t afraid to fight.

WoW Plunderstorm is a stand-alone game mode; however, it rewards players in WoW Classic and WoW: Dragonflight. Rewards get unlocked by gaining Renown with the Keg Leg’s Crew faction, which has 40 tiers.

In addition to new armor appearances, the rewards include pets, ground, water, flying mounts, and titles such as Buccaneer and Plunderlord.

Based on the community feedback, the recent adjustments are good, but the mode also requires more tuning. Currently, a few abilities are deemed too strong, including the Fire Whirl, which has proven to be the strongest in PvP scenarios.

WoW Plunderstorm is a time-limited event that will last for another six weeks before it is gone. However, considering its popularity, it’s likely that WoW Plunderstorm will return sometime in the future as more than a time-limited event.
