Microsoft Officially Shuts Down Four Award Winning Bethesda Studios

Another wave of layoffs as usually comes with mergers.
by Tit Krajnik on May 07, 2024

Xbox has reportedly shut down four Bethesda studios, including Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Studios, Arkane Austin, and Roundhouse Games. The news comes amids multiple layoffs in the industry, which includes Xbox’s previous layoff of almost 2,000 employees.

Since the turn of the year, there have been multiple significant layoffs in the gaming industry, and in recent news, Xbox added to that number by shutting down four Bethesda studios. This is not the first time Xbox has engaged in multiple waves of layoffs, and it is not the first time this year either.

Four Bethesda Studios Shut Down

At the start of the year, Xbox announced the layoff of almost 2,000 employees following the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard. Just a few months later, Microsoft announced another set of layoffs, this time targeting four studios under the Bethesda umbrella.

Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog Studios shut down, whereas ZeniMax Online Studios absorbed the Roundhouse Games and effectively closed its doors. As stated, these shutdowns were about prioritizing high-impact titles and further investment in Bethesda.

This suggests that the projects the studios were working on are no longer a priority for Microsoft.

The now-shut-down Alpha Dog Studios was working on the Mighty Doom mobile game, while Arkane Austin is mostly known for Redfall and the Prey game. Tango Gameworks was behind The Evil Within and Hi-Fi Rush, whereas the Roundhouse Games served a supporting role for other studios throughout most of its time.

Shutting down Tango Gameworks comes as a bit of a shock, as it has achieved immense success with the Hi-Fi Rush, which was one of Xbox’s first multi-platform games.

On the other side, Arkane Austin’s closure is more understandable considering the disastrous launch of Redfall, which still has “Mostly Negative” reviews on Steam and a disappointing 56 Metascore a year after launch. Unfortunately, Arkane Austin won’t have a chance to redeem itself, nor will Redfall receive any more content updates.

Alpha Dog’s mobile shooter, Mighty Doom, will close on August 7.

The only surviving studio, Roundhouse Games, which will fold into ZeniMax Online, will continue to work on The Elder Scrolls Online – as it has over the years.
