Crytek Officially Confirms Current-Gen Upgrade for Hunt: Showdown

Hunt: Showdown 1896 has been revealed as the current-gen upgrade
by Tit Krajnik on July 25, 2024

In an official blog post, Crytek confirmed the release of Hunt: Showdown 1869, a current-gen upgrade for the extraction shooter. The news came days after Hunt: Showdown 1869's existence was revealed; however, at the time, no additional information about it was available.

Hunt: Showdown was released way back in 2018, but despite its old age, the game is still going strong, played by thousands of players. That is even though it's not made for the current generation of platforms. But that’s about to change.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 Set to Launch in August

On Thursday, July 25, Crytek confirmed the release of Hunt: Showdown 1896, a current-gen upgrade for Hunt: Showdown that will be free for Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC in August. The announcement comes after the developer promised a new game version with an upgraded engine for the modern era.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 promises a “whole new experience as we leap forward chronologically and head west of the Bayou backwaters to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado,” along with numerous upgrades and changes, as detailed in the press release.

The new version will use CRYENGINE 5.11 to overhaul the game’s visuals and audio. The changes were displayed in a short trailer for a new map, Mammoth’s Gulch, which will launch with Hunt: Showdown 1896 next month.

In addition to introducing a new map, Crytek promised that Hunt: Showdown 1896 would overhaul many of the original maps.

While an exciting upgrade, Hunt: Showdown 1896 has one major drawback.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 will be released for only PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox X/S and not on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Since it will replace the original game, the latter will no longer be playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

On a more positive note, console players who switch to Xbox X/S or PlayStation 5 will automatically receive the free upgrade and keep their progress.

“As mentioned in Autumn 2023, all console players will automatically receive an upgrade to the new game at no additional cost on their next generation counterpart, including all past purchases and progress.

For players that haven’t yet made the upgrade, rest assured your Hunt legacy will be ready and waiting as soon as you choose to make the switch to PlayStation 5/Xbox Series X|S.”

Although an exciting upgrade, shutting down the original version and preventing PlayStation 4 and Xbox One owners from experiencing the game is a slightly controversial move. However, by allowing those players to keep their progress, Crytek has done everything in its power not to punish the said players.
