League of Legends Update Introduces Ranked Restrictions

Heavier requirement to enter ranked queue
by Tit Krajnik on July 27, 2024

League of Legends' recent update introduced significant changes to the requirements for players to enter ranked matches. With the update, a level 30 account and 20 champions will no longer be enough to play ranked games, forcing players to invest a bit more time before they'll enjoy the League's most played mode.

League of Legends remains one of the most popular online video games in the world. With various game modes, including 2v2v2v2, ARAM, Arena, and the newly introduced Swarm, there's always something for everyone. But by far, the most played mode remains Ranked Play.

Ranked play is no different from any standard League of Legends game, following the traditional 5v5 rules on the Summoner's Rift. But unlike regular games, ranked play allows players to enjoy League of Legends in a more competitive environment, gain LP, and raise their rank from Iron to Challenger.

Up to now, Ranked Play was available to any League of Legends player who met simple criteria – a level 30 account and 20 available Champions. With the new update, that requirement will change.

New LoL Ranked Restrictions

Matt "Phroxzon" Leung-Harrison confirmed in a Twitter post that Patch 14.15 will add new restrictions for League of Legends Ranked mode. In addition to the previous requirements, all new LoL accounts will also need to play at least ten unranked matches to have access to Ranked Play.

This change, as cited by Phroxzon, was a long time coming and is a response to many new players and even bots using ARAM to level up accounts. Since ARAM is a different game mode, it makes it hard for Riot Games to signal their actual skill level, which causes problems with matchmaking in ranked mode.

The changes were also made in response to "smurf" accounts, as they will place new accounts for experienced players at a more appropriate skill level.

"A reasonable amount of them also are alt accounts that we would like to place at their actual skill level, rather than erroneously placing too low and stomping everyone on the way up."

The update follows numerous balanced changes Riot Games has introduced to League of Legends. These were released despite the fact that Riot Games is still working on the yet-to-be-released 2XKO fighting game and the upcoming League of Legends MMORPG, which reset its production earlier this year.
